Description
One of many unique Japanese Maple introductions from acclaimed nurseryman Piet Vergeldt of The Netherlands, ‘Peve Stanley’ is a more recent selection that has become one of our favorites for its distinctive foliage. It showcases beautiful, deeply dissected, feather-like leaves with fringed margins, giving it the soft-textured look of upright laceleaf maple. The lobes overlap somewhat, giving the leaves a three-dimensional appearance. The leaves emerge bright red in spring, transitioning to dark purple-red to blackish during the summer and then bright crimson in fall. A medium-sized upright tree with a light, airy crown reaching 15 to 18 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide makes Peve Stanley an excellent focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It can also be grown in a large pot for situating on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Peve Stanley Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape or containers as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific home or landscape area. That said, it can be grouped in larger landscape spaces, or two can be used to frame an entrance.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â At least 18 feet for space between trees; Keep trunk 6 feet away from home foundation plantings
Note:  One Japanese maple can make a landscape if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won’t interfere with your tree.Â
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are very tough and long-lived trees. They are easy to grow in the ground or containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. How to Plant A Japanese Maple Tree In A Pot
Japanese Maples are understory trees in their natural habitat, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally, they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, ‘Peve Stanley’ will grow in full to mostly sun.
Japanese maples will grow in most any average garden soil. They prefer moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic, so make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
