Description
A tough but beautiful variety of our North America native Redbud tree, ‘Pink Heartbreaker’ is a superior weeping selection in many ways. A faster grower than other weeping cultivars, at 10 to 12 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide its larger size makes for a more impressive specimen in medium to larger size landscape spaces. It has stronger weeping branches that become covered in vibrant rosy lavender-pink flowers before the foliage emerges in spring. Immediately following the spring bloom, the new leaves emerge in a copper color transitioning to richer dark green. They have the typical large heart-shape of the species but hang downward along the weeping stems for a calming waterfall effect. Highly adaptable, heat and cold tolerant (-20F), and easy-to-grow in most any well-drained soil and sun or partial shade, Pink Heartbreaker is a spectacular specimen around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where its flowers, foliage and form can be enjoyed from close up. USDA Zones 5a-9b
Pink Heartbreaker was discovered by Don Eaton as a chance seedling growing in a field of upright-growing redbud trees at Eaton Farms. It was July and therefore a terrible time to dig and relocate a redbud tree, but the field was being ed for replanting so Don moved the weeper to his home. Barely surviving due to the bad timing, only one branch leafed out the following spring, but fortunately that was enough to begin propagation and get the plant into production. Don’s wife Kathy named the tree ‘Pink Heartbreaker’ because it had nearly died and broken their hearts.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 12 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, the Pink Heartbreaker Weeping Redbud tree is ideal for use as a focal specimen in sunny medium to large size sunny or partially shaded landscape or woodland borders or two can be used to frame an entrance. Very nice around outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to pink theme gardens and native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen or use 2 to frame an entryway; if grouped we suggest spacing at least 12 feet apart
Growing Preferences
Â
The Pink Heartbreaker Weeping Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of duirect sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun. It has good drought tolerance when established. Redbud trees do NOT like a waterlogged soil, so make sure to plant in a well draining area. No pruning is required though a stray or damaged branch can be removed at any time of year.Â
