Description
A self-fertile and cold-hardy Kiwi vine, ‘Prolific’ has survived temperatures as low as 0°F. She produces an abundance of exotic-looking, fragrant flowers in spring, followed in late summer by bite-sized, sweet-tart fruits similar in size to a large grape. The green fruits have violet-red skin and are smooth, rather than fuzzy, on the outside, so there’s no need to peel them before eating. The fruits have eight times more vitamin C than oranges and contain 20% natural sugar for outstanding sweetness. Lush, tropical-looking foliage on vigorous vines can reach 20 to 25 feet in length or height and contain up to 100 pounds of fruit on a single mature vine. With that much fruit, this vine will require a sturdy support structure such as a fence, pergola, or T-bar fortified with metal posts or 4×4-inch or larger wood posts. It doesn’t get much better than the Prolific Kiwi if you are looking for an ornamental, lush, and beautiful vine that produces healthy and edible fruits.Â
Cultural Preferences
Kiwi vines are easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil, even amended clay and sandy soils. Avoid soils that are persistently wet during the growing season. The best and heaviest quantity of fruit will be produced when vines are growing in full to mostly sun.Â
