Description
The Purple Leaf Sand Cherry is a large flowering shrub or small tree that grows 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. It is adored for its brilliant foliage color and pretty flowers. In early spring its new leaves emerge a striking rich red maturing to a deep merlot purple-red that holds its color all the way through fall. Soon after the leaves begin to emerge LOADS of delicate, cherry-blossom like fragrant pink flowers emerge contrasting beautifully with the foliage. Following the flowers are a sparse production of inconspicuous dark purple-black berries the birds will enjoy. Purple Leaf Sand cherry can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive focal point tree for small to medium size landscape or garden spaces and home foundation plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Purple leaf Sand Cherry can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as an accent in home foundation plantings and flowering shrub borders or in groupings or as a hedge where space allows. As the shrub grows its lower branches can be removed to form a small tree that makes for a strikingly colorful focal point in sunny spaces. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 5 feet ap[art for solid hedges; 10 or more feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
