Description
One of the best Bamboo species we offer and a top seller, if you want a very dense, quick bamboo grove or privacy screen that will grow under almost any conditions: in cold and hot climates, in sun or shade, inland or along the coast where there is salt air and wind, the Red Margin Bamboo might just be the one you’ve been looking for. Red Margin is one the fastest growing of the screening bamboos we offer and is cold hardy as far north as USDA Zone 5a. It is doing well above 5,000 feet in Denver Colorado!Â
The attributes don’t stop with cold hardiness…this is one very attractive bamboo. It was named for the small red margins on all the new edible shoots. It has beautiful green canes with long nodes. The canes are a handsome olive-green color with fine reddish striping and the culm sheath borders have pronounced red margin. The beautiful canes are sought for use in arts and crafts. The long spaces between the nodes can reach up to 22 inches on mature canes. The hard wood of this species makes it an excellent timber bamboo.
What’s more? Red Margin Bamboo is salt spray tolerant, grows well in sun or even deep shade, and tolerates poorly-drained wet sites. It provides a medium to tall privacy screen depending on your location.

Growing Preferences
Red Margin Bamboo is easy to grow in any average, well-drained but moist soil to wet soils in  full sun or deep shade. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, most bamboo will tolerate periods of dry weather, however, will appreciate an occasional deep soaking if the leaves begin to curl from drought stress.
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Red Margin is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
