Description
Discovered in Belvoir Castle, Ireland, ‘Robinson’s Gold’ is a beautiful golden variant of the ever-popular Leyland Cypress. It displays more intense golden lemon-yellow foliage that is less likely to scorch in full sun than other gold-leaf cultivars. It forms a pyramid of about 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide at the base, clothed in soft and feathery foliage. It is splendid as a bright focal point specimen, grouping, privacy screen, or hedge. Give this one as much sun as possible for the brightest foliage. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight daily for the best foliage color.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright pyramidal form 20 to 24 feet tall and 10 to 12 feet wide at its base, the Robinson’s Gold Leyland Cypress is ideal for use in sunny landscape borders as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screen plantings. It is also very nice to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings or as an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, bird gardens, wildlife gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs when established).
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 8 feet apart for hedges or screens; 15′ or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Robinson’s Gold Leyland Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for the best and brightest foliage color. The foliage on this one doesn’t scorch in full sun as do some other cultivars. It has moderate drought tolerance when established. It is low maintenance requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally pyramidal form. That said, it responds very well to shearing to a more formal shape or for hedges.
