Description
A color factory in the landscape, the Samaritan Variegated Kousa Dogwood sports awesome color in five different ways over the four seasons. In mid to late spring very pretty star-shaped white flowers are displayed at nearly every stem tip on the tree. After the spring bloom the showy white and green variegated leaves take the stage throughout summer. In late summer through fall, abundant strawberry-like red berries adorn the tree contrasting beautifully with the foliage. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the leaves turn brilliant shades of pink and maroon. Orange, tan and grey mottled bark provides winter interest in the landscape. With elegant, graceful branching, Samaritan will reach about 15 to 20 feet tall and equally as wide when all gown up. Excellent disease resistance on the Kousa Dogwood.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and equally as wide, the Samaritan Dogwood is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in a staggered row in partially shaded landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to woodland gardens, yellow theme gardens, Asian theme gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 25′ or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Dogwood trees are adaptable to many soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Though Dogwood trees will tolerate full sun, we think they look and perform best with some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Maintenance is minimal to none. Except to remove a stray or broken branch, no pruning is necessary.
