Description
Selected in 2018 for inclusion into the American Conifer Society Collectors’ Conifer of the Year Program, Cedrus atlantica ‘Sapphire Nymph’ is a slow growing dwarf Blue Atlas Cedar featuring fascinating form and color. It can be grown as a spreading shrub but we think it looks so special as an upright tree that we can’t help but suggest growing it this way. All it takes is a single bamboo plant stake or wooden dowel rod to support the leader. Sapphire Nymph has a dense habit with shorter branches and shorter needles that emerge glittering white aging to steel blue. No one knows the ultimate mature height, but adding 4 to 6 inches or so in height per year, you might expect 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide at 15 to 20 years of age, which makes this unique little dazzler ideal for use in smaller garden spaces and containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Sapphire Nymph Blue Atlas Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden beds or in spaced groupings where space allows. A nice little accent tree in home foundation plantings and around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. Its smaller size and slow growth rate makes it a perfect candidate for containers. A fine addition to rock gardens, conifer gardens, blue theme gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Sapphire Nymph Blue Atlas Cedar is very easy to grow in most any average soil that is well-drained and full to mostly sun. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Maintenance is minimal with no pruning required. That said, lower branches can be removed for mower or other vehicle ance, or so people can walk beneath the canopy. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. We’ve seen no insect or disease problems.
