Description
This is the rare single trunk tree-form version of Picea sitchensis ‘Silberzwerg’, which means “silver sitka,” describing its truly outstanding needle color and slow-growing habit and smaller size. It naturally and slowly forms a dense globe 4 to 6 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide that sits atop a sturdy trunk, which is miniature conisdering its parent can reach height over 200 feet. The tightly-packed stems are densely clothed in short needles that are silvery blue on one side and dark green on the other side. It grows slowly so is a perfect fit for small garden spaces or containers for situating on or around patios and other sunny outdoor sitting or living spaces. Tolerating exposed spots and high winds makes this lovely low-maintenance evergreen a fine selection for coastal gardens and high altitude gardens up to 2,700 feet.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Silver Dwarf Sitka Spruce is ideal for use as an accent specimen in small garden spaces, home foundation plantings, conifer or rock gardens or in spaced groupings at 7 or more feet apart where space allows. Also very nice in pots, planters or other containers for situating on sunny patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to conifer gardens, silver or blue theme gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 7 or more feet apart for spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
Silver Dwarf Sitka Spruce is easy to grow and practically no-maintenance. It prefers a moist but well-drained acidic soil and full to mostly sun. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Pruning isn’t required, because it remains naturally compact on its own. That said, a stray stem can be snipped off as needed. An annual candle pruning can be perfomed for an even smaller plant. Tolerates dry periods when established but will appreciate supplemental irrigation during prolonged drought. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. Hardy in Zones 5-9 in cool-summer climates and Zones 5-7 in hot-summer climates.
