Description
A low to no-maintenance plant anyone can grow indoors or outdoors, Hen and Chicks are hardy perennial succulent plants ideal for growing in garden beds or pots, where they thrive on neglect. Even those who consider they have a “brown thumb” can easily grow this plant. The plant is comprised of one large rosette, called the “hen,” which sprouts many smaller rosettes around it called “chicks.” The ‘Silver King’ Hen and Chicks forms rosettes of pointed, silvery mint green leaves during the warm season that with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall development rosy red to fuchsia-red coloration on most of the leaf with the tips remaining mint green. In summer, leafy flower stalks rise and tower above the hen bearing unique pinkish purple flowers. These magical succulents are super drought tolerant and rarely if ever need water, super cold hardy to -40F, are not bothered by deer or rabbits, and add personality and color just about anywhere!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 inches tall and spreading 12 or more inches wide, Silver King Hen and Chicks is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers, or in groupings in larger garden spaces. A must-have in sunny rock gardens or mixed succulent container gardens. Very nice tucked around boulders.
Suggested Spacing: 12 inches apart for groupings
Growing Preferences
Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, Hen and Chicks likes life on the hot, dry and sunny side. That said, they are extremely cold hardy to -40F. Very well-drained soil is a must as constantly wet soil is a killer. We suggest 6 or more hours of sunlight per day.
