Description
In improvement over ‘Green Giant’, Steeplechase is a superior, fast-growing upright Arborvitae with denser, rich deep green feathery foliage and a smaller stature forming an upright narrow pyramid averaging about 20 to 25 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at its base. Though it might not grow quite as quickly, it is still considered fast growing, adding an average of 2 feet in height per year. Steeplechase is a beautiful, exceptionally durable, low-maintenance evergreen conifer ideal for a tall privacy screen with limited space. It can also be planted in groupings, as a focal point specimen in landscape borders, or to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings.Â
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a narrow pyramid up to 25 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Steeplechase Arborvitae is ideal for a privacy screen, in groupings, or as a tall, vertical accent in home foundation plantings or landscape borders. It also grows well in larger pots and other containers where it serves as a unique centerpiece with foliage that contrasts nicely with flowers and other plants. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, formal gardens, rock gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing:Â Â 6 feet apart for a solid privacy screen; 11 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Arborvitae are easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest six or more hours of sunlight daily for the best overall performance. A wide range of soils are tolerated, including red clay provided it drains well. It prefers neutral to alkaline loamy soil ranging from 6.5 to 8 on the pH scale. It is drought tolerant when established but might prefer occasional supplemental water during extended periods of summer drought. Maintenance is minimal, and no pruning is required to maintain its dense form.
