Description
A perfect fit for smaller garden spaces, this new hybrid Vitex bred at the Chicago Botanic Gardens breaks all of the rules! Meet ‘Summertime Blues’, an improved selection sporting abundant, exceptionally large lavender-blue flowers that bloom from late spring through most of the summer in our gardens, hence the name. Improved cold hardiness on a shrub with a rounded habit to 4′ high and wide in the North (Zones 5-6), where it can be grown as a mid-size shrub, and 8 to 10 feet high in the South (Zones 7-9), where it can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree for landscape borders, home foundation plantings, or containers.
The flowers of Vitex Summertime Blues are irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects. After the flowers, birds will have a fiesta with the seeds in the fall, especially red cardinals. The refined, sage-scented leaves resemble those of Japanese maples, adding a delicate texture, pleasing color, and sensory appeal in the landscape. Extreme drought tolerance when established, a more manageable size, and sterile flowers make this colorful and easy-to-grow flowering shrub a great fit for smaller garden spaces almost anywhere in the country (Zones 5a to 9b).
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Summertime Blues Vitex can be grown as a mid-size shrub in the North (Zones 5-6) or a larger shrub or lower branches removed to form a small tree in the South (Zones 7-9). Either way, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape borders and garden beds. Also a nice accent in home foundation plantings and perennial gardens. Looks especially nice around garden ponds and other bodies of waters. A fine addition to blue or purple theme gardens, bird gardens, pollinator gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs)!
Suggested Spacing:Â 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Chaste Tree will grow in most any average soil, including clay soils. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil however will tolerate temporary wet or dry conditions when established. As with so many other ornamental shrubs and trees, a constantly wet or waterlogged soil can be problematic.
Note:Â The Summertime Blues Vitex is cold hardy in USDA Zones 5a-9b. In USDA Zone 5 young plants might die back to the ground during an unusually cold winter. If so, cut the plant back to the ground like you would a butterfly bush and it will quickly regrow to form a shrub 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
