Description
Prized for its long-lasting and glorious fall color show, fast growth rate and symmetrical form, ‘Sun Valley’ is a superior hybrid Red Maple developed and released by the U.S. National Arboretum. It is a cross of ‘Red Sunset’ and ‘Autumn Flame’, from which it gets its fast growth growth and handsome, rich green leaves that turn outstanding brilliant red shades in fall. In late winter to early spring small clusters of flowers the beneficial pollinators will appreciate appear at the tips of almost every twig on the tree. It is a male tree so does not produce the samaras (winged seeds). Long lived and highly adaptable and reliable, the Sun Valley Red Maple will thrive in most any soil of average fertility and tolerates periodic wet or dry soils when established. At 30 to 35 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide with a dense, symmetrical oval crown that makes for a fine yard specimen, shade tree, or to line a street, drive or property line.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Typically growing 30 to 35 feet in height by 20 to 25 feet wide, the Sun Valley Red Maple is ideal for use as a lawn specimen, shade tree, in groupings or in straight or staggered rows as a screen or to delineate property lines or line a driveway or street. Also nice to provide shade near the home and sitting areas or outdoor living spaces and to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures. When planted on the west side of the home the shade provided can substantially reduce cooling costs. A fine addition to red theme gardens, wildlife gardens, native plant gardens and sunny to partially shaded woodland borders.Â
Suggested Spacing:Â Â 15 to 20 feet apart for screens; 30 feet or more apart for space between trees; space trees at least 12 feet from a driveway, walkway or home foundation.
Growing Preferences
Thriving as far south as USDA Zone 7b and north to Zone 4a, the Sun Valley Red Maple is exceptionally adaptable and easy to grow. It thrives in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Established trees tolerate periodic wet or dry soils.
