Description
The Sunsation Magnolia is adored for the unique coloration and fragrance of its flowers as well as its statuesque, tall and slender form. In spring, perched on nearly every stem tip on the tree are large, 7 inch, fragrant, tulip-shaped, sunshine-yellow flowers flushed and streaked rosy reddish-purple at the base. Sunsation blooms later in spring than any other yellow flowering magnolia. Ovate, large dark green leaves provide a bold texture throughout the season turning yellow in fall. A fast grower, Sunsation will reach around 20 to 25 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at 10 years of age making it an amazing specimen where height is desired but space is limited.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Sunsation Yellow Magnolia is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings, to line a drive or walkway, or use two to frame an entryway. Also nice to frame the corners of two to three-story homes and other structures. Excellent near patios, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the beautiful and wonderfully fragrant flowers can be enjoyed from close up. Can also be grown in large pots, planters and containers of 18 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
Sunsation Yellow Magnolia is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of sunlight for best flowering. In the South, some filtered sun or shade during the hot mid-afternoon hours of summer might be appreciated. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning usually isn’t necessary, however stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in spring. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.
