Description
Vanilla Twist Redbud is an extraordinary selection of our Native Redbud tree. A year-round beauty, it forms a gracefully weeping tree with cascading branches that are nearly covered in early spring with clusters of vanilla-white, pea-like flowers. Following the flowers, the charming heart-shaped leaves emerge in chartreuse shades, gradually maturing to rich green. When temperatures cool in fall, the leaves turn shades of yellow. After they drop, the silhouette of weeping branches provides interest throughout the winter. Like other redbuds, Vanilla Twist is a rugged, yet beautiful, tree that’s easy to grow and low-maintenance. It is heat-tolerant and cold-tolerant to -20°F, and adapts to almost any well-drained soil, as well as sun or partial shade. It is a spectacular and lovely specimen, perfect for around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, where it is sure to provide a calming waterfall effect.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Vanilla Twist Weeping Redbud tree is an ideal focal specimen for sunny or partially shaded landscapes or woodland borders. Two can be used to frame an entrance. It is nice planted near outdoor sitting and living spaces where its pretty leaves, flowers, and form can be enjoyed from up close. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens and native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen,, or use two to frame an entrance. If grouped, we recommend spacing at least 12 feet apart.
Growing Preferences
Â
The Vanilla Twist Weeping Redbud tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day or all-day, lightly filtered sun. It has good drought tolerance when established. Redbud trees do not like waterlogged soil, so be sure to plant them in a well-draining area. No pruning is required, though a stray or damaged branch can be removed at any time of year.Â
