Description
Picea mariana ‘Aureovariegata’ is an incredibly attractive selection of our North American native Black Spruce. If you like foliage variegation subtle and not screaming loud, the Variegated Black Hills Spruce aims to please. In spring its soft new growth emerges creamy yellow transitioning to a glowing creamy white as it ages, which is a wonderful contrast with the short and thick gray-blue needles of the older foliage and other plants nearby. A somewhat slow grower when compared to the species, ‘Aureovariegata’ forms a sculptural pyramid that might reach 6 to 7 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet wide at its base at 10 years of age and 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide or so at maturity. Unlike many other coniferous evergreens, this spruce will thrive in consistently moist to even somewhat boggy conditions. In hot-summer climates we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the hottest afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. An excellent specimen in landscape borders, home foundation plantings and rock gardens, or grow it in a pot that can be kept on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A captivating photogenic beauty that is sure to be a conversation piece.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Variegated Black Hills Spruce is ideal for use as a a focal point specimen on sunny to partially shaded landscape border. Also nice as an accent tree or to frame corners or entrances in home foundation plantings or other structures. Excellent as for decorating as an outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow or white theme gardens, alpine gardens, rock gardens and Asian theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as specimen, two to frame an entrance or in spaced groupings at 12 feet or more apart
Growing Preferences
The Variegated Black Hills Spruce is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly wet soils or standing water can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. It grows well in full sun, however in Zone 8 hot-summer climates it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours when the sun is most intense. For best overall performance, 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day is suggested.
