Description

An extremely rare and beautiful Japanese Maple, ‘Victoria Red Sensation’ is a weeping red lace leaf selection forming a fine-textured cascading umbrella in the garden. Its finely dissected, 7-lobed, ribbon-like leaves are brick-red against green stems in spring, which is a lovely contrast. The leaves transition to green with bronze during summer and then to attractive shades of yellow and orange during fall. No one has enough long term experience with this one to know its mature size, but we’ve heard 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide at 10 years of age. We’re estimating maybe 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity. Spend some time picking a very special spot in the landscape for this one. Also excellent in containers that can be situated on patios and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Victoria Red Sensation Japanese Maple is ideal for use in garden beds and containers as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, Japanese Maples are often used to accentuate entryways by planting one on both sides of an entrance, or spaced widely in clusters of three where space allows.

Suggested Spacing: 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in pots, planters and other containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, there are many sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties, of which Victoria Red Sensation is one. That said, in hot-summer climates where summer heat and sun intensity can be extreme, we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
