An distinctively beautiful alternative for smaller spaces where larger growing Hinoki Cypress won’t fit, ‘Well’s Special’ features irregularly tiered branches clothed in sprays of soft and feathery light green new growth maturing to a handsome emerald green on a narrow pyramidal form averaging 10 to 15 feet tall and maybe 4 to 6 feet wide at the base. The contrast between the juvenile foliage and elegant sprays of mature leaves is extremely appealing providing a soft texture in the garden. It has a more natural looking growth habit when left unpruned however responds well to pruning for a more dense form that makes it perfect for use as a distinct outdoor Christmas tree. Very easy to grow and tolerant of neglect when established, Well’s Special is excellent in the sunny to partially shaded landscape or as a solo or centerpiece in container gardens.  

The Well’s Special Hinoki Cypress is very easy to grow in a well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. It is quite drought tolerant when established but will appreciate an occasional deep watering during prolonged periods of dry weather in summer. Otherwise, maintenance is minimal. No pruning is required though responds well to it for shaping purposes. Provide a light application of slow release shrub and tree fertilizer in spring.
