Description

‘Winter’s Red Columnar’ is a statuesque Japanese Maple with an upright, columnar growth habit, sure to put an impressive exclamation point on your landscape. At 10 years of age, it reaches about 8 to 10 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. After 10 years, it slowly adds height and width, reaching approximately 12 to 14 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide over time. The color of this magnificent cultivar has Japanese written all over it. The leaves emerge a bright red in spring, gradually turning to maroon. In summer, the foliage lightens a bit in color, and the center of the leaves develops a golden glow. As temperatures cool in fall, the leaves turn to a brilliant red. An excellent specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundations where space is limited.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Winter’s Columnar Red Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen, drawing attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant it in groupings of three or use two to frame an entryway.

Suggested Spacing: At least 8 feet apart for space between trees

Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate-looking, Japanese Maples are very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally, they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, Winter’s Columnar Red is considered sun-tolerant, though in hot summer climates it might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be a problem. So, make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
