Description
Yellow Groove is a beautiful and very cold hardy Bamboo handling temperatures down to -10°F. Most of its dark green canes with yellow stripes grow very straight and are rigidly upright and dense to give you a colorful privacy screen of up to 40 feet in height, even near walkways or driveways. What’s really neat is that about 1 out of maybe every 10 canes forms a zig-sag pattern at the base. Culm sheath colors appear purple-green usually striped with yellow. Grown mainly as an ornamental, this species is also among the best of the best for its edible shoots, which don’t have the acrid flavor when raw.

Growing Preferences
Yellow Groove Bamboo is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. During the first growing season after planting, water as needed to keep soil around the plants moist, but not soggy or wet. When established, Yellow Groove is quite drought tolerant. Exceptionally cold hardy to -10°F
How To Grow Bamboo Plants Indoors
Yellow Groove is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of Yellow Groove Bamboo are edible and used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or installing Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
