Description
Native to China and now extremely rare in the wild, Magnolia zenii, commonly known as the Zen Magnolia, is an attractive, small, upright tree with a natural branching habit, growing 15 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide. It is sure to add a Zen feel to any landscape. The earliest flowering of all magnolias, heralding the arrival of spring, it features LOADS pussy willow-like fuzzy, egg-shaped buds that open to very fragrant, cute, 4″ diameter, nine-petaled tulip-shaped flowers with white petals streaked in pinkish-purple. The blooms are followed by cylindrical clusters of rose-pink colored fruits resembling those of coralberry bushes. The tree is clothed in dark green, elliptical leaves that can reach up to 8 inches in length, arranged in bunches that lend a tropical look and feel to the landscape. Cool temperatures in fall bring rich, golden-brown shades. The Zen Magnolia is an easy-to-grow, adorable specimen tree for the landscape in Zones 5a to 8b, and its winter flowers and attractive, smooth gray bark are sure to make it a captivating conversation piece.
History
First described by W.C Cheng in 1933 and subsequently brought into cultivation at the Jiangsu Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden in Nanjing.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide, the Zen Magnolia is perfect for a specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. It is lovely around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where it will provide some shade, and the pretty flowers and fragrance can be enjoyed from up close. It is a fine addition to white theme gardens, fragrance gardens, Asian-themed gardens, bird gardens, and cottage gardens.Â
Growing Preferences
Zen Magnolia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained acidic soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily—the more sun, the more flowers. In hot summer climates, it might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon when the sunlight is most intense. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity. Pruning is usually not necessary; however, stray or damaged branches can be pruned immediately after flowering in the spring. As the tree grows taller, lower branches can be removed to a desired height. Feed after flowering in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron or sulfur.Â
