Description
A new twist, or should we say “zig zag,” on our magnificent North American native Rredbud tree, Zig Zag is sure to be a captivating conversation piece in the landscape. Though all redbuds have a zig-zag pattern on their newest stems, the Zig Zag Redbud takes the pattern to a new level with a zig-zagging trunk and all the branches! Redbuds are known as “harbingers of spring” for their early spring bloom, and Zog Zag is no different. The branches and stems are smothered in clusters of pea-like, vibrant fuschia flowers in late winter to early spring. Immediately after flowering, its beautiful, heart-shaped, bright green leaves emerge to warm your heart. The leaves mature to darker green by summer, turning to golden-yellow in fall before dropping to let the zig-zag branches take the stage for winter. Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, Zig Zag might reach 20 feet tall and 25 feet wide at maturity and grows well in the sun or part shade.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright with an irregular rounded form 20 feet tall and 25 feet wide, the Zig Zag Redbud is an ideal focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. It is also lovely to frame the corners of tall homes and provide interest, beauty, and shade around patios, porches, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It is a fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens, woodland gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Eastern Redbud tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and full sun or part shade. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. No pruning is necessary.
